Buying Guide
There are two types of USB Hub:
- Self-powered USB hub: is a hub that derives power from a dedicated power source to supply power to the hub itself and its connected devices.
- Bus-Powered USB hub: is a hub that draws power from the connected host machine (Surface Go) to the hub itself and its connected devices.
There are three reasons that you will need a USB-C Hub for your Surface Go:
- Connect to a full-size USB device: Your Surface Go has only a USB-C port that is not compatible with the full-size USB port without an adapter or hub.
- Connect multiple USB devices: Using a USB hub can help you to connect your Surface Go to an external USB keyboard, USB mouse, USB drives, or a printer at the same time.
- More connection interfaces: Some hubs have a built-in Ethernet port, Micro SD, SD port, audio, and more, so you can connect your Surface Go to more device interfaces that not possible before.

The Microsoft branded Microsoft USB-C® 5-in-1 Travel Hub is a piece of junk. On the Go2 it only powers 1 USB port at a time, and frequently doesn’t recognize either without a reboot with the accessory in place. It refuses at all times to recognize my cellular dongle, and there are severe restrictions on USB charging of devices through the ports.
