Active vs Passive Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter
When you are looking for an adapter to convert from Mini DisplayPort to DVI for your Surface devices, you need to know what is different between passive and active adapter.
There are a lot of users who experience problems when they try to connect dual external displays to their Surface Dock. The main reason is Surface Dock doesn’t support dual-mode Display (DP++). The DP++ can dynamically convert the signal from Mini DisplayPort to DVI. So Surface Dock need an active adapter that has a special chip for signal conversion.
Generally, an active adapter is more expensive than a passive adapter. However, if you have a Surface Dock, then the active adapter will be a required accessory. Here are the best active adapters that allow your Surface devices to output up to 4K display.

Hi,
thank you for this information. I was about to order two surface docks for my home office and my business.
I my business im using two external displays with HDMI. In my home office however I’m using two external displays to connect with DVI.
The surface dock has quite a few other benefits I don’t want to miss (e.g. power cord included, USB, LAN).
So, could you recommend a solution where I can use two external screens?
Are active mDP/DVI adapters sufficient for this task?
Do I have to mind anything with mDP/HDMI adapters?
Evan, thank you for your efforts. I really like this page.
Regards,
Stef
Thank Stef for reading my article. Here is my recommendation:
1. At your home, you will need 2 active mDP/DVI adapters for connecting your Surface Dock to both DVI Monitors.
2. At your business, you will also need 2 active mDP/HDMI (https://surfacetip.com/best-active-mini-displayport-hdmi-adapter/) for connecting your Surface Dock to both HDMI Monitors.
I hope this will help you. I personally also have this setup at my home.
Thanks for the useful info. Your article only specifically mentions adapters for use with the Surface Dock. Which of these would work WITHOUT the Surface Dock, connected directly to the mini DP port of my Surface Pro 3?
Thank you.
