rSSD
Stands for “Removable Solid-State Drive” or “Microsoft Surface Removal SSDs.” A special SSD spare package that is cross-compatible with any rSSD-compatible Surface device and doesn’t require a license or authorization to perform the replacement.
The term was introduced by Microsoft when launching the Microsoft Surface Pro X back in 2019. Here is the list of Surface devices that support SSD removal and rSSD:
- Surface Laptop Studio
- Surface Pro 9
- Surface Pro 9 with 5G
- Surface Pro 8
- Surface Pro 7+
- Surface Pro X
- Surface Laptop Go
- Surface Laptop Go 2
- Surface Laptop 3
- Surface Laptop 4
- Surface Laptop 5
- Surface Studio 2+
Surface Pro 7+, 8, and 9, the rSSD module is located right under the kickstand.
For other Surface devices, you will need to follow the service guide to get inside the device’s chassis to remove or replace the rSSD.
