Short for “Bare Metal Recovery.” Refers to the clean imaging process where users want to replace their computer’s hard drive by completely wiping it or removing all existing partitions and recreating using a bootable recovery media.

According to Microsoft, there are two types of recovery media, user-created recovery media, and manufacturer-created recovery media. For Surface owners, you can download the official recovery image from Microsoft, and create a recovery drive to reset any Surface devices you have.
